Each Stowellen design begins in Benjamin's studio as a rendered sketch. After conceptualizing and finalizing the 2D version of each piece, Benjamin puts on his face mask (a respirator to protect against abalone toxins) and heads to his carving station. Within each design, Benjamin seeks to incorporate or reconstruct natural forms with precision. Some pieces are based on exact replicas and created with a specific pattern, while others are Benjamin's freehand version of what he sees. Each piece of jewelry is hand carved with a dremel and file, then finished with a polish. Due to the grain of abalone and ebony, no two pieces can be carved to be exactly the same. Benjamin then assembles the chain by hand, finishing with a stylized wire wrap. Benjamin's process, along with his choice of material, ensure that each piece of jewelry is unique to its wearer and completely hand carved and one of a kind.
